Mr. Chong Cunjie, 63 years old, was an employee of the Hebei Province (Hengshui City) Forced Labour Camp. He began practising Falun Gong in 1995, and was the Hengshui City Falun Gong Volunteer Assistant. On July 20th, 1999, Mr. Chong was working in the Labour Camp. The Hengshui City Legal Bureau dispatched an employee to persuade Mr. Chong to go to the Bureau claiming that they only wanted to have a talk with him, but instead they arrested him. All of the Labour Camp employees pleaded that Mr. Chong be released, but he was sentenced to two years in prison. That was the first time he was sentenced to a prison term. He was released on July 26th, 2001. At around 2:30 a.m. on February 13th, 2002, two days after the Chinese New Year, he escaped arrest by climbing down a pipe from the fourth floor of his home building. He had to leave home to avoid arrest. However, he was arrested on March 16th, 2002. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and released on March 16th, 2007.

Mr. Chong was fired from his job. He had an 89-year-old mother and young grandson to care for. His son and daughter-in-law are both in prison for practising Falun Gong. Mr. Chong's health was severely damaged from being imprisoned for seven years. He had lost his voice and appeared very ill. He died of a heart attack in the Yongxing Hospital on February 5th, 2008, two days before the Chinese New Year.
