On 11th October 2002, Mr. Ian Luke MP convened a meeting at the City Hall of Dundee to express thanks to all those in Scotland who supported Baby Minghui in winning back her right to a nationality. Mr. John Letford, Lord Provost of Dundee, came to the meeting and represented the people of Dundee to congratulate Baby Minghui and her parents on the success.

Mr. Ian Luke MP and Mr. John Letford, Lord Provost of Dundee, with Baby Minghui and her parents. They are holding Baby Minghui’s new Chinese passport and her mother’s passport, on which her registration was stamped but later cancelled by the Chinese Embassy.

Baby Minghui is already 2 years old and has actually turned into a toddler now. She was born in Wales where her parents were studying. When she was just 6 months old, she was refused registration by the Chinese Embassy in London, and was deprived of her basic rights to a nationality, solely because her parents were Falun Gong practitioners. Determined to win back her rights, Minghui’s parents, You Yi and Mo Zhengfang, started a campaign to ask for support from all kind-hearted people in Britain. With the help from British people, politicians and government officials, in July this year Minghui finally got her Chinese passport from the Embassy. Mr. Ian Luke, UK Member of Parliament in You Yi and Mo Zhengfang’s constituency, arranged this Thank-You meeting to express gratitude to all those who have contributed support.

A Falun Gong practitioner from Hong Kong was also invited to the meeting. She talked about the proposed anti-subversion legislation which the Hong Kong authorities have been pressurised by Beijing to enact in order to further erode the freedom of Hong Kong which people there have enjoyed for so long under the British rule. The Lord Provost was apparently impressed by Hong Kong practitioners’ courage and perseverance in continuing to clarify the truth to people both at home and overseas under such harsh circumstances. He said, “You are very brave!” And he said he would be willing to be of help within his scope of responsibilities.

After this meeting, Mr. Ian Luke will organise another Thank-You meeting in London in November, to say thanks to the UK government and members of parliament, and the governments of England and Wales, among other people and organisations, who supported Baby Minghui in winning the rights that she deserved.
