Ms. Liao An'an was sentenced to five years on February 6th following her arrest last September for practising Falun Gong. The authorities soon transferred her to a local prison without any notification to her family.

Prior to her latest imprisonment, the 80-year-old woman from Baiyin City, Gansu Province had been detained many times for exercising her constitutional right to practise Falun Gong.

In particular, she was first given five years back in 2008. While incarcerated at Gansu Province Women's Prison, she was brutally beaten and forced to do hard labour for refusing to give up her belief. Several times she was rushed to the emergency department after losing consciousness as a result of the abuse she suffered. In addition, she developed high blood pressure and lost 20 pounds in a short period of time.

She was released on medical parole in July 2011, only to be arrested again on September 19th, 2014.

Back in 2002 Ms. Liao was twice detained, and her family was forced to pay 7,000 yuan1 to get her released. Since local police often harassed and threatened her, she was forced to leave her home in 2006. Her workplace stopped her pension payment in the same year.
