Ms. Li Hongping Tortured and Coerced Into a Confession by Police in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province
Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Li Hongping is an employee of the Second Property Company of China Petroleum & Petrochemical Co., Lanzhou City Branch. On May 14th, 2007, four police officers went to the Lintao Street Garage where she worked, and arrested her. That same night, Ms. Li was tortured and coerced into a confession. She was forced to sit on a tiger bench1, and to "hang up in the air."2 After she was brutally tortured at the Lanzhou City Police Department, she was transferred to the Gongjiawan Brainwashing Centre and again tortured. The officers at the brainwashing centre also ordered her employer to pay 3000 yuan3 for a so called "transformation"3 fee. Ms. Li Hongping's husband Mr. Zhao Xudong, also a practitioner, was arrested by spies from the Lanzhou City State Security Bureau on February 5th, 2004. He died as a result of torture at the Lanzhou City Second Detention Centre. Ms. Li's mother-in-law, Ms. Bai Jinyu, was tortured to the point of becoming disabled by spies at the Lanzhou City State Security Bureau and was sentenced to prison. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time. 3. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China. 4.
