AFP Reports on US Project to Promote Human Rights in China On April 8 2003, European media agency AFP (Agence France Presse) reported on the fourth year of the US State Departments 8.5 million dollar project to promote human rights in China. In the AFP report, the State Department reveals the program is designed to foster initiatives designed to promote democracy, human rights, freedom of information and criminal and civil rule of law. This news comes as the Chinese regime unveils new plans to violate the freedom of Internet users by erecting a national boundary, completely controlling the websites and information they are able to access. AFP writes that the recently released 2002 US report on human rights in China stated that Chinas "human rights record throughout the year remained poor, and the government continued to commit numerous and serious abuses". These abuses are most tellingly portrayed in the persecution against Falun Gong practitioners who have been suffering vicious and brutal suppression for almost four years. The last few months have seen a rapid increase in the deaths of Falun Gong practitioners at the hands of the Chinese regime with the death toll topping 650. The AFP report also talks about the US governments plans to sponsor a resolution critical of China at the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
